Some call the Hanging Gardens “Abhinav Gardens” as it’s truly Abhinav or unique. These are beautifully landscaped terraced gardens on top of Malabar Hills on the west side opposite the Kamala Nehru Park. From this point you get gorgeous sunset views. In 1881, the park was laid out by Ulhas Ghapokar over the large Mumbai reservoir in order to protect the waters from being contaminated by the Towers of Silence. How to reach?
You can take the Ridge Road from Marine Drive or the Walkeshwat road from Marine Drive to reach the Hanging Gardens in South Mumbai.. From Charmi Road station in the west it’s only a 15 minute bike ride to reach the gardens.
What to See and Do?
The hanging gardens has large bushes that are painstakingly shaped like animals. Kids would love to pose and play amidst the colourful shrubbery and bushes here. The entire garden has well laid pathways that criss-cross it from various directions. These pathways are basically used by walkers and joggers who love the serene atmosphere of the gardens
There is a very pretty flower clock in the centre of the garden. You can have a panoramic view of the Arabian ocean from the garden. There is a special section with slides, see saws and children’s play bars that is perfect for kids. Seniors can also relax here as there is a place with benches and drinking water taps where they can rest.
Another attraction here is the Boot House or the Old Woman’s shoe that is an interesting structure fashioned out of stone. Lots of bright flowers and butterflies dot the garden ….it’s a wonderful place to admire nature, sit and gossip with friends, romance with your loved one or simply sit silently in the company of nature. The water fountains here keep the hanging gardens cool and refreshing.
