Bangalore itself is a lovely garden city with plenty of recreational spots but there are times when you feel like getting away from it all. Happily, there are dozens of weekend getaways within easy travelling distance. Pick any from the top five listed here and enjoy.
If you want a total change of place and atmosphere, Coorg is where you should be headed on a Friday night. It is about 6 hours drive on SH17 and the best way to get there is on a bike obtained from rentals that offer to rent bikes in Bangalore or from car rental Bangalore. Coorg is plantation country with a relaxed lazy lifestyle and lots of interesting cuisine not to speak of lush greenery all around and the hills for some challenging treks. There is a wildlife park here and numerous coffee plantations. It is cool and relaxing, which is what you can do or go about and explore Raja’s Seat, Abbety Falls, Nagarhole Park, Namdroling Monastery and Irpu Falls.
Ooty and Kotagiri offer a delightful sojourn in cool hill resorts. Ooty is 270 km from Bangalore and Kotagiri is a bit farther. Ooty may be crowded but it is heavenly with its quaint and charming atmosphere and picture postcard scenery. You can visit the Rose Gardens, the Wax Museum, the Chocolate museum and the Ooty lake. Do not forget a ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway train. If you want a place with less crowds then head to Kotagiri where its colonial atmosphere will take you back in time and give you a sense of peaceful relaxation.
If Kotagiri is too far then Nandi Hills are closer, just 60 km from Bangalore and the perfect spot for a weekend of relaxation. Nandi Hill is better known for beng Tippu Sultan’s summer residence that one must visit. There are other activities to keep you busy such as cycling, trekking and paragliding.
If you love nature and would like to splash about in water then Bheemeshwari is the place for you. Just 105 km from Bangalore, this place offers you a stay in jungle lodge and then you can set off to fish or to engage in river rafting. You can laze about in the lap of nature by the bank of the river and do some angling or have an exhilarating time. Bheemeshwari does not disappoint.
Shivanasamudra Water Falls
If you love picturesque and scenic destinations, Shivanasamudra is hard to beat. The waterfall here, an offshoot of the Cauvery, is a sight for sore eyes and the perfect spot for a picnic, laze about, go sightseeing, rappelling or trekking. Shivanasamudra is just 135 km from Bangalore and an ideal weekend getaway.
