Dr.Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai. It can be called the paradise of history lovers. Situated in Byculla East it was established in 1855 as a treasure house of the decorative and industrial arts. Earlier it was known as the Victoria and Albert Museum. The museum won UNESCO’s 2005 Award of Excellence in the field of Cultural Conservation.

The museum showcases the city’s cultural heritage and history through fine and decorative arts highlighting early modern art practices in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency and beyond. The museum collection includes clay models, maps, lithographs, photographs and rare books on the life of the people of Mumbai and the history of the city. It also has a recreational space for performance, outdoor activities and workshops. Some abandoned spaces have been restored by the museum to accommodate a Special Projects Space, Museum Cafe, Museum Shop and Education Centre. A zoo adjacent to the museum also makes this trip a haven of knowledge and fun session for kids.
There are fascinating stones kept outside the museum that signify the end of Mumbai Geography at one point of time. The museum also has well kept artefacts and crafts from all over the world.
It is also an ideal place for educational excursions and school trips as it provides a lot of knowledge regarding the history of the city.
An interesting fact about the museum is that a unique kind of tiles has been used for the stairs and the first floor. It is known as the Minton tiles. These tiles couldn’t be used anywhere as the ship carrying the tiles met with a tragic accident.
